YORK, PA (WPMT) – City police take the biggest hit in proposed cuts in Mayor Kim Bracey’s 2015 budget proposal. Calling it the hardest thing she has had to do since taking office, the Mayor proposal calls for cutting 75 positions, roughly 20% of the city payroll. The cuts include 46 positions in the city police bureau. 8 firefighter positions are on the chopping block. It also calls for hikes in the city’s earned income tax and sewer rates.

In her presentation to city council late Tuesday afternoon, Mayor Bracey choked back her emotions. She said the budget addresses the city’s 7 million dollar deficit.

The final outcome of the budget proposal is unclear because the city has contractual obligations with the police and firefighter unions.

City Council is scheduled to vote on the budget on December 16.
