TRENTON — Trenton City Council is expected to vote Thursday on two police contracts that call for 12-hour shifts and 5 percent pay raises over three years.
Tentative agreements were reached with the Policemen’s Benevolent Association Local 11, the union for rank-and-file patrol officers and detectives, and the Superior Officers union, the union for sergeants, lieutenants and captains.
PBA Local 11, whose contract expired Dec. 31, 2010, negotiated contracts from 2011 through 2014 and from Jan. 1, 2015 through Dec. 31, 2018.
The Superior Officers union agreed to a five-year contract, retroactive to the beginning of 2013.
The patrol officers now work 10-hour shifts, but that would change July 1.
Under the new schedule, there would be three overlapping shifts of 12 hours each, one beginning at 6 a.m. and the other two at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.
Neither of the unions will get retroactive pay, but effective July 1, they will get a one-time base salary increase of 11.75 percent and annual raises of 1.25 percent over the next three years.
