N Charleston Slager

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCIV) — The former North Charleston police officer charged with murder in the death of an unarmed black man during a traffic stop in April has filed a lawsuit.

According to the filing, Slager filed the suit against the Southern States Police Benevolent Association after the association stopped paying for his legal bills associated with the shooting of Walter Scott.

Slager says he was guaranteed legal services through the Police Benevolent Association but through bad faith acts on the association’s part, he has had to pay for his legal services out of pocket.

Slager is being represented by Andy Savage.

The former police officer argues he is entitled to full compensation for the losses he’s suffered as a result of the lack of legal service, as well as punitive damages.

Slager has been held in an isolation unit of the Al Cannon Detention Center since cellphone video surfaced of the incident and he was charged with murder. He sought a release on bond but a judge denied the motion.
