A national police union has asked Congress to expand the federal hate crimes statute to include targeted assassinations of police in the wake of the killings of two New York Police Department officers last month.

The Fraternal Order of Police, which has over 300,000 members, said the 1969 Hate Crimes Act should include targeted assassinations of police like those that killed NYPD officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu on Dec. 20.

“My thoughts and prayers over the past few weeks have been with the families of officers who were, with malice and forethought, gunned down just because they served as police officers,” union president Chuck Canterbury said in a statement. “Enough is enough! It’s time for Congress to do something to protect the men and women who protect us.”
