HOUSTON — The Houston Police Officers’ Union announced its state-wide event Let’s Pray Texas event early this week.

Mayor Sylvester Turner and other Houston leaders gathered for a press conference Monday afternoon to discuss the importance of the event, and how the organization plans to bring law enforcement officers and communities together.

“We held the Let’s Pray Houston event last January, which was a big success as well. And now we’re taking it take the event state-wide,” HPOU vice-President Douglass Griffith said. “We have reached out to members across the state, police unions, police departments, any kind of law enforcement and first responders, to come together.”

Griffin said HPOU has a vision to promote unification, not only among law enforcement agencies, but also within the communities which they serve. He added the event isn’t exclusive to residents who love or support law enforcement but also those who don’t care for the current law enforcement practices and policies.

“If you want to effect change, then you better get on in and pray for us. That’s the only way that change is going to happen” Griffith said.

The mayor said it’s good that the city is held this event last year, and it’s even more import that the state holds it again this week.

“When I think about what has taken place in the last 11 months; for example, the shooting that was in Memorial area only a few weeks ago,” Turner said. “The shooting that took place in West University area, where nine people were injured. There is a need to pray for one another and for all of law enforcement.”

Let’s Pray Texas is going to start with 24 hours of prayer at the HPOU office’s prayer room until noon Tuesday. The main prayer will be conducted Wednesday at 1 p.m. when the HPOU will so be handing out Prayer for Police and Let’s Pray Texas wristbands.

“Together unified in one prayer that we stay safe and for the leaders of this nation, especially in the state of Texas and our cities,” Griffith said.
