HOUSTON – Since Deputy Darren Goforth’s death last fall, thousands of people have participated in ‘Pray for Police’ events. On Tuesday, police returned the favor and spent the day praying for Houston, with the first ever ‘Let’s Pray Houston’ day.

“We just want to give back to our community, that’s what this is all about. We’re here to protect and serve, and part of that service is making sure we lift up our citizens in prayer,” said Douglas Griffith, Vice President of the Houston Police Officers Union.

The Houston Police Officers Union hosted the day of prayer, marching through downtown to City Hall, alongside other law enforcement, local clergy and volunteers. Together, they gathered in the lobby of City Hall to pray for the community, as well as local leaders, Mayor Turner, and city council members.

“The reality is, that a city that believes in prayer, and recognizes the power of prayer, is a city that will grow and will thrive and be safe,” said Mayor Turner as he addressed the crowd.

During the ceremony, Turner also officially named January 26th ‘Let’s Pray Houston’ day.
